The Hour’s propaganda

Ryerson Review of Journalism, 2005:

Jennifer Dettman, executive producer, helped create the show’s concept by targeting audiences with Stroumbo’s youthful personality. “I suppose that’s cool,” says Stroumbo, “because for the longest time, getting people under the age of 15 engaged on a Newsworld program was rare.” Doyle, on the other hand, argues that no program on television should be so outlandish and different that it alienates a portion of the viewers by age group. But Stroumbo denies that the show is doing that. “People say the show is aimed at getting younger viewers,” he says. “But if it were, why would I interview a holocaust survivor?”

“In the meantime, Stroumbo sticks to advice he learned early in his career from Canadian radio guru Bob Mackowycz: Never talk down to your audience, and fuck ’em if they don’t get it.”

Poor poor unfortunate “sneech”,if tea makers content is troubling you that much well….too darn bad,I’m so sorry to say!
Wee “sneech” your no tree so leave us Tea Makers if your so hurt.Twitter may be the right pacing for you or perhaps the CbC kids page.It must be awful to not have full brain power, but wee “sneech” the objective of tea makers has always been clear.
Good press/bad press its all good really, how is anything going to improve if voices can not be heard! The Tea Makers should put a disclaimer on the posting section for u Sneechers instructing you to a “Sunshine & Lolly pops” page where you can tell us all the “lovely” sides of the CBC and its anchors.Heck there could be a whole page/section for “love letters straight from your heart to fellow cbc staffers!Wouldn’t that be nice “sneech”,sorry but the only niceties you can find on the web about cbc and their staffers is wikipedia.Maybe that would be fun for “Sneechers”(tee hee hee)!

Hey, it was a whole different ballgame back in ’05. George was only 33, still young enough to date hipster chix. Back in them days he was all awkward when senior management ‘cougs’ busted moves on him.

Christ, Kim D’eon was even working on The Hour – AND she still had her hoser $treet Cents accent, not that god awful broadcasting school, flattened-out thing she has now.

And CBC had an orchestra. That’s right kids – a fucking Symphony Orchestra! And chips were only 75 cents a bag and blah blah de blah blah blah …

I miss the days when this blog did so much more than rag on The Hour and Q.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but I do agree that the roots of the problem are farther up the ladder and more attention should be paid to them.

The Hour doesn’™t appear to be aimed at anybody. It isn’™t aimed at young people. It isn’™t aimed at anyone with more than a high school education. It’™s not really aimed at blue collar people either. It appears to be just a make-work project for George and other friends of CBC managers.

Young blood? That would require actually hiring and grooming young talent!

  • Anonymous says:

The cbc definitely needs some young blood.

  • Dettman needs a BIG head checking! says:

If she targeting a younger audience then why did she choose a guy most teens cannot relate to.Is there not one teen Canadian cbc celeb that could’ve co-anchored with Father Strombo.

    • Hubert Hubert says:

Father Strombo, LOL. ITA. Every other media company on the planet knows that if you want to appeal to the modern teenager, you have to use people that are close to their age. All of today’s music, television and movies geared towards teenagers, feature performers that are either in their teens or early to mid-twenties at the most. CBC execs are the only people on Earth who believe that in 2010, you can dress an old man up as a teenager and teenagers will somehow “relate” to him.

According to Mein Kampf, the ’œmasses are stupid’ and Goebbels believed ’œthe people want to be bamboozled’….
