CBC News Network not even trying at historic national moment

As the country went wild with jubilation, CBC News had nothing.
Not even the smallest effort to be part of the excitement.
A giant expensive broadcasting facility in Vancouver sat idle.
No man-in-the-street interviews, no commentary, nothing LIVE from Vancouver or anywhere.
In fact it seemed as if the CBC went out of its way to make sure that no one was distracted from watching CTV.
A brief mention at the top of the hour, and it’s on to The Passionate Eye and the old standby – The Royals!

CityTV no longer has newscasts on weekends. Therefore, it’s not just the managers off, but the whole news department.

We have proof we don’t need those pompous fuckers any more. Totally anonymous citizens can do a far better job than dinosaurs with Alzheimers.

Apparently, CityTV missed their big opportunity take advantage of their Dundas Square location because the managers have the weekend off too…so much for 24-hour news.

PS – It’s called counter programming.
Anyone interested in the Olympic celebrations would be watching CTV. So why not provide an alternative for those anti-Olympic, monarchists.

“Would a LIVE broadcast from the street or a bar that showed nearby screens of CTV broadcast constitute infringement?”

According the official IOC News Access Rules, yes. If somebody could recognize the Olympics as being in the background on a TV screen, that is a violation.

This post proves this blog’s irrelevancy. If you don’t understand why there was no Olympic coverage on CBC, you cannot pretend to comment intelligently on the inner workings of broadcast networks.

    Hello,

There were no pictures because there was no plan. The assignment desk had no idea this should be something they should cover. They only do what they are told by the managers of the HUB. HUB mangers are off on the weekend. So be it. What a shame we missed it. Why try when the mangers don’t give a shit.

Congratulations! You don’t understand broadcast rights!

Actually, Jian covered the Olympics last night moment-by-moment on Twitter. Isn’t that enough?

    • Copypasta says:

Broadcast rights prevent the CBC from filming a celebration in the streets? What rights might these be?

    • Allan says:

      Reality is copyrighted?
The top video of this post may have to come down if CTV or the Olympic committee objects, since it was their resources that gathered the material.
      That much I can understand.
But all video shot inside that building or out on the streets of Vancouver, even by the CBC, is legitimate news gathering.
Would a LIVE broadcast from the street or a bar that showed nearby screens of CTV broadcast constitute infringement? Don’t think so.
Would stills from the event be prohibited? Apparently not, since that’s all the CBC could muster at the time, as per their newscast.
Mustn’t upset the pre-ordained schedule with … what do you call that? … oh yeah, Breaking News!

CBC is totally LAME! You have to go to youtube to get the real juice. The Corp is officially dead, obsolete and IRRELEVANT as of this date. RIP

      THANK YOU

    • Citizen says:

And congratulations to you, Kev, on a perfectly condescending response:

“You, watching the TV, don’t know anything. So just be quiet and watch what we show you.”

      • Kev says:

I’d actually love it if people in general would take more interest in the general issue of which this is one facet, but I was replying to someone making a dog’s breakfast of media criticism, not addressing the audience. But feel free to play the salt of the earth card if you want.

        • Citizen says:

I thought we *were* discussing it? Isn’t that what this site is about? Isn’t that what the post is about?

If you have an opinion on the issue, let ‘er rip. We’re all reading.
