‘Must you run photographs of Jian Ghomeshi?’

Letter to editors of Toronto Life (November 2009), by Eric Morris, Toronto (not onliné):

Must you run photographs of Jian Ghomeshi, Shinan Govani, and Ben Mulroney in every issue? In September, your readers were treated to four pictures from the above group: Two Shinans, a Jian, and a Ben. How many will it be next month? I was hoping you could clarify a few things:

  1. Do they pay for the placements?
  2. Is this a Where’s Waldo–like feature [of] Toronto Life?
  3. Is Toronto that boring, or have your contributors run out of subjects?
  4. Does anyone truly think your readers need to see more of any of these people?
  5. Is this all a joke?

Lovely letter! The ubiquity of these guys just proves what schmoozers they are (& that they have no family home life). Self-promoting narcissists are the only people who survive in media these days…it’s one big clique – just like high-school!

On the other hand, attending events is part of their job. They probably laugh at how ridiculous it is that they appear so often. Yeah some celebs get their photos in mags on purpose to be seen, but somehow I don’t think it’s the case here.

Isn’t attending events merely the “job” of Shineboy Govani, a gossip columnist, and Ben Mulroney, host of a show promoting American celebrities, but not of Jian, who, as we know, is nothing more or less than the host of a public-radio program?

If it was just part of the job, explain why George “Strombo” is not attending these events (or is he just not being photographed)?
