Today’s Globe & Mail poll showed some surprising results.
Canada has spoken.
And Sanjaya …
is …
your new …
Canadian Idol!
That is, until a closer look, provided unwittingly by insidecbc.ca
Confirmed by the great iNudes:
Yah those numbers may be a bit off since emails have been going around CBC all day asking staffers to vote.
Hey, it’s a free country.

Just because a manager asked people to vote in it (and going from the writing style and audience I’m pretty sure I know who!), doesn’t mean their vote was counted in any meaningful way. Most regions including Toronto go through the aforementioned proxies.
It could of course be that the Globe’s polling software doesn’t check for this kind of thing, but given who I think sent it, and who they would have sent it to, it still wouldn’t account for a significant amount of the vote.
Thanks, iNudes.
Fact and fiction will continue to blur as more events unfold, so it’s always good to get some real info from primary sources.
Nothing wrong with voting, as you say. Just gotta kwell the hotheads / right wing a-holes from crying fowl.
OK you want the email Anon 9:46? Here is the one I got. All names have been removed to protect the toronto manager who sent it out. I can tell you it was sent to everyone in my region. For the record I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them doing this. You don’t think the conservative staffers might also have forwarded an email around saying: hey everyone vote no to the cbc funding? As long as it’s still one person, one vote then I think it’s reasonable. Using a bot or hacking the poll, not so much. Anyway here it is:
There’s a poll today on the Globe and Mail site asking people to vote whether or not the Feds should provide more funding to the CBC.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/
Scroll down the page – the poll is on the right side near the bottom.
Please vote YES and pass this along to your colleagues in your regional office. So far the response is swinging to the NO side.
Anon 8:16, post a copy of the e-mail, will you?
I don’t know anybody inside who got a message like this.
Nothing was sent as a mass mailout from communications.
When I got the email I was told to vote yes
Results are actually better than posted here above – it’s 76% YES.
I am Canadian.
“But Paul is trying and that’s how you get better.”
You don’t think he summarizes newspaper articles as well as you do?
I sort of know how the internet works, and IP addresses and all that.
I also know how the internet can e used to skew results, which is how I choose to view this poll.
I believe the Toronto Star poll more accurately reflects the mood and opinions of Canadians.
I’ll point out that the Star poll did not have an email campaign attached to it like the Globe did.
Point out also the clear evidence of an attempt to cast a vote twice as proven by the clip from insidecbc.
I like the inside blog, it’s fun to watch and very badly written and done.
But Paul is trying and that’s how you get better.
I’ll point out as well that the inside blog, which I follow avidly, chose to print the more encouraging poll rather than tell it’s readers about the discouraging Star poll, and so encouraging illusion as opposed to reality.
It’s noteworthy as well that the readership of a supposedly “liberal” newspaper is of the same opinion as the Federal government – no bail-out.
It’s simply too early into the Depression for the government to start playing favorites when both it and The CBC have yet to understand and assess the enormity of the problem.
We don’™t have a blacklist of blogs we ignore. On the other hand, Jeff Keay self-contradicted and told us he ignores this one. So please get your story straight.
Hey Allan,
It was actually intentional, not unwitting. It’s funny.
ok now back to your regular programming.
Also as was pointed out on the insidethecbc blog, which this website fails to mention because it wouldn’t help the anti-cbc agenda of it, CBC staff share IP addresses.
So for example in a place like the Toronto Broadcast Centre all of the people in that building share one or two IP addresses.
Thus there is no way that CBC people based on the timing of the poll could have skewed the results that heavily. After one person with your IP address does the poll, noone else can do it.
Based on the number of centres and the number of IPs people actually at their desks at the CBC probably could only account for like 100 of those votes.
You can deny it all you want but that is how the Internet works.
The poll is still far from scientific but to think that CBC staff enmasse created the result is delusional.
Even if you accept that a whole bunch of CBC staff voted, do you really think it would have made up 5,000 vote difference? That’s a third of the total votes. Unless someone can convince me that the poll was hacked (ie a computer did most of the voting) then I think the overall result is still true, just not as heavily weighted on the “yes” side.
It’s also all over this thing called ‘Facebook’.
Not an employee, but when I heard about the poll…damn right I’m going to vote “yes”.
