Next up on JACK FM: Angélique Kidjo

  • “It is moving away from something only the public broadcaster can do to something many private broadcasters already do” – Ian Morrison, Friends of Canadian Broadcasting
  • “Anyone who thinks private broadcasters are doing what this ‘new’ Radio 2 will do is vastly overestimating private broadcasters” – Valerie Hunter

I looked over the playlists for Buck 65’s Drive and excerpted the first pair of songs played the first day, the second pair from the second day, and so on.

  • “Dreamer,” Grant, Jenn
  • “Myriad Harbour,” New Pornographers
  • “I’m a Mountain,” Harmer, Sarah
  • “Gimme Shelter,” Kidjo, Angélique
  • “Poor Helpless Dreams,” Sexsmith, Ron
  • “Annalisa,” MacLeod, Paul
  • “Measures and Scales,” Jill Barber
  • «Ange gardien», Stéfie Shock
  • “Where and When,” Hayden
  • “Vanorapa,” Chiwoniso
  • “Stolen Earrings,” Two Hours’ Traffic
  • “That Summer,” Andy Stochansky

Then I asked Friends of Canadian Broadcasting to tell me exactly which private broadcaster is playing any of those songs. (Not “many private broadcasters” – I’d be happy with just one citation.) If they bother to respond, I’ll report it. But could they have been bullshitting all along?

    Are you sure of that?

Saying it has to apply to a “single show” means you could pick any show at all.

That’s an incredibly broad demand to make when Morrison’s actual claim is pretty vague (“moving towards something…”)

Still, I think I get your point.

Here’s a less nitpicky point on my part: The best show to sample to demonstrate how valid, useful and valuable Radio 2’s programming is would be one of the more challenging, offbeat shows. But – ooops – there aren’t any anymore.

  • Fake Ouimet says:

It’s an admittedly limited sample. But the other “New 2” shows are even more dissimilar to the Privates’ programming ‒œ Znaimerian classical station[s] included. (Doesn’t he own two now?)

And anyway, for Morrison’s generalization to hold, it has to be applicable even to a single show.

  • Bytowner says:

Maybe so, but if none of those pops up on any private station’s playlist for the last week, then Mr. Morrison’s going to have to deal with the implications of that fact.

  • Anonymous says:

yeah, but you only sampled one show.

That’s hardly “calling bullshit” on anything.

  • Fake Ouimet says:

I don’t disagree with you there, but I was calling bullshit on the specific charge Ian Morrison levelled.

  • Anonymous says:

well, you’ve only picked out one show.

And the proper comparison for that show is not commercial radio, but campus stations, which play all of the artists listed. And you can hear campus radio almost anywhere you can get a Radio 2 signal.

Is this show any better than a college radio show? I leave it to the listeners to decide.
