Then pray tell us, o informed one, if you actually know, just how far the reporter went.
But when in comes to asses in the workplace, please refrain from kissing or kicking.

A bit late reading this post, but to answer anonymous’ comment that the reporter should be commended:

This was a clear violation of journalistic ethics and anybody who tells you it’s normal operating procedure doesn’t really know how far said reporter went to further her own story.

The only blow to staff morale on this issue is the fact that she got a slap on the wrist instead of a boot to the unemployment line.

Kudos to Cruikshank for at least taking some kind of action. I suspect he would have liked to deliver a swift kick in the ass personally.

And Enik, it’s well known that the reporter in question needs journalistic training, obedience training, etiquette training. Maybe the CBC will offer a package deal if she actually shows up in Toronto in this millenium.

I’ll emphasize John Cruickshank’s words: “One of the key principles outlined in OUR HANDBOOK is that our journalists must not have any association, or engage in activities, that could reasonably give rise to perceptions of partiality.” & “Our very MANDATE is to provide Canadians with a view of their political life unobstructed by bias.” & “We have to stand apart. Our MANDATE demands it…” Anon2: “…our role at the CBC is different from the private media whose obligation is, ultimately, only to their shareholders.”

Given all the “mis speaking” (according to Peter Van Loan) on Parliament Hill does it surprise anyone that the reporter did what pretty much all other private sector reporters do to get at and produce an unbiased story? The reporter should have been commended rather than “outted”. Is this a case of internal CBC politics? or is it a message to all CBC reporters to simply not report on anything controversial particulary around politics? I can imagine what this has done for staff morale there!

The CBC amateur-sports channel is clearly the legacy of Nancy Lee. She now works for the Vancouver Olympics. Oddly, the Canadian Olympic Committee wants its own sports channel. Interlocking interests?

Given the decades of corruption surrounding ’œOlympism,’ as fulsomely documented by Andrew Jennings, if either of these things has to be greenlit, it shouldn’™t be the COC’™s.

Of course, the problem here is the whole thing sounds like Patrick Watson’™s bleatings from the old folks’™ home that CBC should really be airing kiddies’™ soccer games. (Do you want to watch the children of Annex and Riverdale liberals cavorting half-assedly on a soccer pitch?)

    Oh, I almost forgot: Heel.

No no, not journalistic training–obedience training.

You know: Sit; Up; Jump; Lie Down; Roll Over; Play Dead.

Well, I must admit I’m a bit confused about all this. The new CBC “publisher” says, “the reporter involved has been reassigned to a different job in Toronto where she can receive further training.”

Fascinating. I would have thought that CBC reporters at the Ottawa bureau would have been beyond beginner level.

How did this reporter get to Ottawa if she still needed more “training?”
