Bloggers on Test the Nation

When the nice people at Test the Nation asked me to be on the “blogger” team for the 21st century trivia edition, I was flattered. But I’m not crazy.

Instead I suggested 3 others: Joe Clark, Raymi, and regular Tea Makers contributor Allan. Tell me that team wouldn’t kick some major ass? Especially in the furry hat, Jimi Hendrix, and TTC Signage categories.

The team has been formed. I see Joe was passed over. So was Raymi. But Allan is there. To my surprise, so is Tod Maffin.

Now, regular readers of this blog may or may not know that Allan and Tod don’t always see eye to eye. It happens sometimes. But can these 2 bloggers put aside their differences long enough to outsmart the celebrity lookalikes?

Stay tuned. Taping is in January. Surely someone will blog about this?

And many of you might be wondering, what does Allan look like? And which one of the bloggers from the team photo is he?
Hint: he’s Chinese.

I can’t believe they didn’t op to save a plane flight, and invite Raymi.

    Instead, they took me :-)

    Happy New Year, Ouimet!
It’s been a fun ride up to now. You actually started 2007 with a post about Test The Nation, and here we are at the end. A few notable moments along the way – Tony Burman gave up, while George couldn’t shut up and Tea Makers added a sidebar for comments. And hey, you scored a beer ad!
And now we have another year to see where all this blogging mania takes us in our “public discourse”.
Book of Don has added new depth to the few dozen voices that trip out on Canadian media. When writing about story meetings, Don said “our ideas become sharper and more … focused once they’ve been savaged by (others)”, and It reminds me of the mayhem of all this blog stuff (especially the Anonymous savages), and that probably the best we can hope for is to stumble upon those new and better ideas by letting all the voices join in and take a shot.
Thanks for your many posts throughout the year that inspired and cajoled the complacent and the comfortable.
    Long live Ouimet.

There are 36 members of the blogger team on Test the Nation. The list on the website is incomplete, a symptom of the usual cbc bureaucracy in which the producer who books the show has limited access to the web producer who updates the website. So don’t make assumptions based on the list that is there. Joe may indeed still be on the team, unless he was explicitly told otherwise. In which case it could be a rowdy show.

How do we know that they aren’t just blogger look-alikes?

I got the pitch from the produceuse, who knew enough to carry on an E-mail conversation with me without top-posting. After changing the font, I printed out the application and saw that, in its favour, it actually asked about dietary requirements. To its detriment, it also asked for what were obviously quirky fun facts that could be used to gently lampoon contestants during lulls.

I then procrastinated filling it in, and have apparently not made the cut. Then again, they have a cast of thousands, and I am a writer, not (’œmerely’) a blogger.

I have mixed feelings, in other words.

Need I join the chorus of complaints about yet another press photo of ’œbloggers’ in which laptops are a tired, clichéd prop?
