Senior Writer, The Hour – TOR02591

The Hour is looking for a senior writer to add to its creative team. The successful candidate will demonstrate and maintain exceptional skills in writing for broadcast – with specific experience in both news and comedy writing.

What you do:

Gather information and write material for presentation on a national television program, or via other media. Demonstrate and maintain exceptional skill in writing for broadcast. Work adheres to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Advice and guidance are available but initiative and independent judgment are expected. Work can involve the co-ordination of the activities of others and close co-operation with the program unit is essential.

Key Tasks:

  • Gather information on issues and events of a regional and/or national and/or international significance, from a variety of carefully developed sources.
  • Write material for presentation on air that describes these issues and events in a clear and concise manner and provides detailed analysis to enhance the understanding of the listener or viewer.
  • Write and conceive of comedy segments for a daily late-night talk program
  • Critically edit material written by others and/or items produced by others.
  • Coordinate the exchange of program material.

As required, performs the following tasks:

  • any task of a Reporter / Editor.
  • edit, encode, digitize and package audio and video material for a website using appropriate technologies.

Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary education or equivalent editorial experience is essential.
  • The candidate must have experience writing for news and entertainment television
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 3 years of comedy writing experience, either for tv or live comedy shows.
  • A broad understanding and interest of contemporary cultural, social and political issues.
  • The candidate must have strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • S/he must be a team player with solid people skills who can direct, perform and delegate assignments across editorial, production and technical lines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high pressure, tight deadline environment, often in an unexpected overtime situation.
  • Must be able to work to deadline.
  • Proven ability to capture the "voice" of an on-air personality
  • Must be capable of original and creative thought in the production of television programming.
  • Must have the ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently.
  • Must be able to solve problems independently and in-group discussions.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Open to new ideas and approaches.
  • Bilingualism an asset.
