The Role:

As the Director, Digital Rights, you will work closely with the rest of CBC’s Business, Rights & Content Management (BRC) group, other CBC departments and the independent production community and you will be responsible for strategy, oversight, negotiation and drafting of agreements and recommendations to the Senior Director of BRC with respect to offering CBC programs on platforms outside of the traditional television platform. You will be intimately familiar with the various options, platforms and business models for CBC content outside of traditional television (including with respect to radio, IPTV, downloading and streaming on the internet, wireless and Video On Demand).

You have the ability to assess and review financing from sources outside of CBC (including tax credits and third party funds including the Canada Media Fund, the Bell Fund and Quebecor) and will be responsible for CBC’s planning and strategy with respect to those external sources.

In addition to the above, you will act as back-up to the Senior Director of BRC, and the other BRC Directors, with respect to their content business work for CBC English Services.

What you bring:

  • In addition to a post-secondary education or related experience, you have in-depth knowledge of television, radio and new media production, negotiating techniques, contract law, corporate business practices, and the funding rules of various new media agencies. This position requires financial and contract management experience and strong computer skills.
  • Bilingualism would be considered an asset.
    The successful candidate will have the ability to comprehend and translate the concerns of internal CBC departments into appropriate strategy, terms and contracts within the constraints of the applicable regulatory bodies and funding guidelines.
  • This position requires excellent communication skills, both written and verbal as well as excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with the Senior Director, BRC, the Directors and Managers in BRC, CBC senior management, and internal support departments such as Digital Platforms and Business Development, Legal, Merchandising, Human Resources and the French Network (Radio-Canada), as well as external contacts such as government funding agencies and independent producers.
  • The Incumbent is required to handle multiple priorities, a heavy workload and respond to several urgent demands in a short space of time. The successful incumbent must also be able to exercise judgment, work independently and take initiative.
  • The ability to conduct in depth analysis of problems before determining how to proceed is required. There may also be a requirement to work beyond normal office hours, including evenings and weekends as well as the flexibility to attend industry functions and events.
