Function:

  • Performs editorial assignments related to the gathering, writing and presentation of program material for English Radio and in particular CBC Saskatchewan’s Morning Edition.
  • With appropriate direction from one or more Producers, participates in the production, direction and/or post-production of a program and/or program segment.
  • Work is governed by CBC journalistic and programming policies and standards.
  • Advice and guidance are regularly available but there is latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
  • There may be opportunity to coordinate the work of others and close co-operation with the program unit is essential.
  • The development and delivery of all material will be coordinated with the producer of the Morning Edition.
  • The Associate Producer’s material will be vetted and produced by the recipient program.
  • The Associate Producer will report to the producer of the Morning Edition.

Key Tasks:

  • Contributes ideas for program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives.
  • Obtains studios, crews, lines, uplinks, remotes and other technical and production resources required by the program on behalf of all Producers and freelancers
  • Assists in developing program content including writing, researching and/or editing.
  • Prepares scripts; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.
  • Organizes the participation of interviewees, creative contributors and other participants, develops background, introduction, and line of questioning, arranges for any necessary research, and ensures the briefing of hosts. Maintains contact files.
  • Processes invoices and obtains authorizing signatures as required.
  • Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.

As required performs the following tasks:

  • Selects music, sound effects and/or actuality;
  • Produces program elements;
  • Directs a program, either live or pre-packaged, in studio or at a remote location;
  • Assigns, directs and coordinates the work of other personnel working on a project for which the Producer is responsible;
  • Edits and mixes, or directs the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements;
  • Writes continuity, edits text, edits and prepares voice-mail for broadcast;
  • Logs programs and music in appropriate information systems;
  • Edits, encodes, digitizes and packages audio and video material for a website using appropriate technologies;
  • Assists in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience, which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program;
  • Performs other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.
  • The successful candidate may be required to work some weekend shifts.

Qualifications

Education Required: Job requires a university degree or equivalent.

Experience Required: Job requires a minimum of two years’ relevant experience during which the candidate would gain exposure to journalism, computers and the technology of radio or television broadcasting.

This position will not be filled until consideration has been made by the CBC/CMG Local Joint Employment Committee.
