Temporary Position (11 months)

Assists in achieving Corporation objectives by providing specialized technical and production guidance, by providing leadership for other employees, and by undertaking the overall coordination of assigned programs with CBC News, Newsworld Business and RDI. Creative problem solving is required to solve operational difficulties, to assess and optimize the use of resources, and to motivate others. Often works independently. Work is generally performed according to accepted CBC or industry standards but there is wide latitude for independent action, judgment and initiative. There are requirements to work in a self-administered environment.

What’s the role:

  • Maintains familiarity with technical or production installations and any associated equipment.
  • Conducts surveys and prepares detailed reports.
  • Acting as a consultant, provides assistance and advice on operational requirements in terms of equipment, facilities and personnel
  • Within delegated limits, plans, assigns, schedules, coordinates and checks the work of assigned staff and reports on matters related to job performance, conduct and safety.
  • Trains new staff and advises management on their progress.
  • Arranges training.
  • Verifies the accuracy of time reports and work performed.
  • Undertakes reviews of the operations, operating procedures, technical standards and maintenance activities. Submits recommendations for improvements or modifications.
  • Recommends safety procedures.
  • Plans and maintains safety measures and programs for personnel, property and equipment.
  • Reviews, investigates and verifies reports and institutes any action as necessary.

Within delegated authority and in consultation with the supervisor:

  • Commits the Corporation in arranging, with outside persons or firms, for the provision of supplies or services
  • Reviews or directs such arrangements
  • Verifies delivery of material or completion of service
  • Performs all or part of the function or duties of equivalent or lower classifications.

As assigned or required, may perform any or all of the following tasks:

  • Within delegated limits, hire staff for casual requirements.
  • Provide specialized assistance and work in close consultation with Engineers and Technologists.
  • Provide input to the budget process.
  • Participate in the selection and evaluation of new staff.

What you bring:

  • Four years related experience.
  • Community college graduation in Television arts courses, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Requires a superior knowledge and understanding of television program production and presentation methods. This includes understanding how different areas and crafts interrelate.
  • Knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Knowledge of studio operations.
  • Must be familiar with switching video and mixing audio live to air.
  • This position requires the flexibility to work a variety of shifts as well as overtime and weekends, as required.
  • Must have a strong technical base and be abreast of the current production trends and equipment trends.
  • Must have strong computer skills including knowledge of INews.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of editing and edit suite operations and Broadcast Centre television facilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative.
  • Must be bilingual (English and French)
  • Serious consideration will go to those candidates that have a demonstrated keen interest in topical news and current affairs.
  • Must be able to work in a deadline driven news environment while maintaining a calm, professional and understanding attitude.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment.
  • The ability to work independently, without direction.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must have strong leadership skills.
  • Provide feedback to on-air talent on sound and image.
