CBC/Radio Canada is Canada’s national public broadcaster and one of its largest cultural institutions and brings diverse regional and cultural perspectives into the daily lives of Canadians in English, French and eight aboriginal languages.

Your Role:

Reporting to the Executive Producer of Music in Ottawa, you will be primarily responsible for producing and hosting Bandwidth, Radio 1’s popular provincial music show. The successful candidate will have a particular knowledge of Canadian (with an emphasis on Ontario) artists, bands and singer/songwriter and the ability to program this music for broadcast.

You will contribute live recordings to Canada Live and The Signal. This involves pitching concert ideas, coordinating recordings, and assembling packages for the shows. Objective and subjective evaluation skills in terms of what makes a good sound recording are key competencies for this position. You will also be responsible for the production, direction and/or postproduction of a program or program segment by executing both programming, hosting and technical functions.

You will plan, conceive, organize, and/or develop the production and realization of a program segment, program, or series. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices and the Producer is ultimately responsible for ensuring that this occurs. Nevertheless, there is wide latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. There is a regular and ongoing requirement to co-ordinate the work of others.

Key tasks include:

  • Contributes ideas for program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives.
  • Oversees costings of the productions
  • Assists in developing program content including writing, researching and/or editing.
  • Prepares scripts; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.
  • Ensures that equipment, facilities, program sources and personnel are available to meet operational and program requirements.
  • Sets up and operates equipment to meet program and production goals.
  • Edits and mixes programs or program segments.
  • Ensures that program mixes, including the creation of audio effects to meet program and production goals, achieve optimum aural results.
  • Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.

As required,

  • produces program elements;
  • directs a program, either live or pre-packaged, in studio or at a remote location;
  • presents material on air;
  • organizes the participation of interviewees, creative contributors and other participants, develops background, introduction and line of questioning, conducts or arranges for any necessary research and ensure the briefing of hosts;
  • assists in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program;
  • selects and plays music, sound effects and/or actuality;
  • edits, encodes, digitizes and packagse audio and video for a website using appropriate technologies.

Your Profile:

  • Job requires a university degree or equivalent.
  • Job requires five years’ experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry.
  • A minimum of 3years experience with proven abilities in program production is essential.
  • Proven radio production experience and music background.
  • Proven music picking skills in the popular genre.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic radio technical functions including desktop editing.
  • Solid judgment and ability to problem solve under pressure.
  • Proven ability to direct in studio.
  • Familiarity with studio operations.
  • Experience with small-scale music recording and studio acoustics
  • Driver’s licence.
  • Requires the ability to clearly communicate with staff, guests and musicians.
  • Highly motivated with ability to self-initiate projects
  • Must be fast-thinking, flexible and must be able to work with fellow staff members and guests under highly stressful circumstances and take control of situations, as required.
