The Programmer is responsible for supporting systems and applications that acquire, re-purpose and distribute CBC content in various formats to external business clients. The Programmer will design, prototype, implement and test scripts and/or applications. As a member of the Syndication Team, the Programmer will work closely with other production and operations staff from across the CBC. The Programmer will communicate effectively with external clients, satisfy their needs, and foster business relationships.

What’s the role:

  • Communicate directly with external partners to refine requirements, implement solutions, quality assurance testing and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain documented implementation plans (internal and external) for each partnership
  • Manage risk effectively with all stakeholders (internal and external) as appropriate.
  • Provide time estimates and effort required for development, testing and releases for requirements.
  • Design, diagram/model, prototype and document technical solutions for requirements.
  • Implement, unit test and code review technical solutions.
  • Establish new feeds, change management of existing feeds, and deprecating obsolete feeds.
  • Manage delivery of video assets and metadata to any number of partners
  • Extend technical solutions from the Content Management System
  • Integrate technical solutions to a Media Delivery System
  • Integrate technical solutions from a Digital Asset Management System
  • Abide by standards and processes (e.g. software development practices)
  • Prepare complete documentation for each application, upgrade or modification
  • Research and evaluate emerging Internet technologies.

What you will bring:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • The ability to program in a wide range of computer languages including Java, J2EE (JDBC ans Servlets), JavaScript, Perl, Shellscript, XML and XSLT.
  • Knowledge of both UNIX and NT environments.
  • A minimum two years experience in development and management of content-rich websites for organizations or equivalent experience in New Media website development or Computer Programming.
  • Client Relations and/or Technical Support Experience.
  • Ability to conceptualize, design, prototype and implement applications.
  • Creative problem solving for multi-platform production and distribution across all areas of CBC English television (Sports, Arts & Entertainment, Children’s, Youth and Daytime Programming, News and Current Affairs, etc.) which utilize new digital and broadband technologies.
  • The ability to communicate with technical staff at external clients, partners and vendors.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organizational and time management skills and the ability to quickly learn new technologies.
  • The ability to conduct in depth analysis of problems and develop effective solutions.
  • The ability to handle multiple priorities and respond to several urgent demands and concentration when focusing on tasks.
  • Independent judgment and ability to take initiative.
