The Role:

The Web Developer is responsible for developing and maintaining innovative, multimedia and interactive web pages including: Radio programming support pages.

Responsibilities:

  • Work within established guidelines to design, develop and maintain web pages on CBC.ca.
  • Implement and maintain pages to national standards, including templates where appropriate.
  • Work closely with other units of Digital Programming and Business Development.
  • Train and support local CBC Radio employees – in content development and maintenance.
  • Seek opportunities for new development, automation and streamlining of content management processes.
  • Advise Manager on web issues.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing working relationships with co-workers, for the purposes of feedback, support and information-sharing.
  • Research and evaluate emerging Internet technologies and make recommendations.

What you will bring to this role:

  • 3 to 5 years of solid experience crafting XHTML/CSS websites.
  • An understanding of the radio and television broadcast industry.
  • Familiar with CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • W3C Standards.
  • Best practices for web and mobile development.
  • Current online trends and technology.
  • MovableType software.
  • Experience working with web APIs. In particular Social Media sites such as Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, data feeds (XML, JSON, CVS), web services technologies (EG. SOAP), common Javascript libraries, and CSS frameworks.
    PHP and other server-side scripting skills
  • Skilled in AJAX design and implementation experience, XHTML, XML, XSL, XSLT, SSI, JavaScript, CSS, MySQL/PostGreSQL development and maintenance, Audio / Video encoding and streaming (Windows Media esential), Flash (AS2 & AS3), Web design principles, graphic design software, web development software (Dreamweaver or other text editors), Mac and Windows PCs, JSP, Unix scripting, and graphic design software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Visio).
  • Audio / video editing would be considered an asset.
  • Experience working in a broadcast environment.
  • Ability to conceive strategic creative web development initiatives, building upon the programming strengths of CBC Sports.
  • Ability to reinforce the values of the CBC in internet-based media initiatives.
    Flexible, aesthetic, good design principles and the ability to create web programming that pushes the limits of Internet technology – within the DP&BD (Digital Programming and – – Business Development) guidelines.
  • Natural problem solver with proven leadership and teamwork skills
  • Great multi-tasking abilities and strong analysis skills.
  • Superior communications skills (oral and written), and be able to communicate clearly and effectively about programming, content and technological issues.
  • Good organizational skills and be able to work through others in unrelated departments to achieve goals.
  • Ability to manage projects from conception to completion and maintain ongoing projects and keep an eye on the future.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands and meet deadlines is essential.
