The Role:

As the Reporter/Editor, you will perform reporting and editorial assignments related to the gathering, writing and publication of material for CBCNews.ca. This role is assigned to gather information and write material for publication on cbc.ca so the incumbent must demonstrate and maintain exceptional skill in writing for online.

Other responsibilities of this role include:

  • Gathering information on issues and events of a regional and national significance, from a variety of carefully developed sources.
  • Writing material for publication on the Internet — including headlines, text articles, photo captions and interactive features –that describe these issues and events in a clear and concise manner to an international audience and provides detailed analysis to enhance the understanding of the reader.
  • Ensuring all text — including headlines, text articles, photo captions and interactive features conforms to standard English grammar and CBCNews.ca style, including proper spellings and capitalization.
  • Developing and maintaining contacts with a variety of sources.
  • Gathering and reporting information from various sources.
  • As required, liaise with other staff to ensure required material is available, and follow particular areas of current public interest or concern.

What you will bring:

The successful candidate will have a:

  • A minimum of three years of recent experience writing news for a major professional print or online publication.
  • Experience and proven ability in writing to conform to Standard English grammar, Canadian Press style and proper print spellings and capitalization; knowledge of CBCNews.ca style an asset.
  • Experience in determining potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations in print or online copy, and ability to act on them.
  • Understanding of Canadian print libel law.
  • Experience and proven ability to critically write with appropriate flow, clarity, conciseness to ensure online or print readability.
  • Experience and proven ability to write/edit crisp, clear, concise text headlines, subheads, photo captions and summaries.
  • Ability to write a wide range of news and current affairs material for a multi-faceted 24/7 online news operation, including stories involving world affairs, Canada, sports, arts, business, health and science.
  • Ability to write material for publication on the Internet that describes regional, national and international issues in a clear and concise manner, ensuring that all necessary context (including maps and interactive features) is incorporated to enhance the reader’s understanding.
  • Must successfully pass CBCNews.ca writing test.
  • Basic knowledge of common computer software required: Word processing, Photoshop, FTP, etc.
  • Job requires a university degree or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the online news industry, online news best practices and CBCNews.ca standards an asset.
  • Proven ability to ensure facts in print or online articles are accurate.
  • Have the ability to determine the newsworthiness of a story for online audiences.
  • Possess strong skills at working with editors to improve print/online copy.
  • Have sound online news judgment and ability to work effectively under 24/7 online newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to be strong team player.
  • Must produce an acceptable critique of CBCNews.ca.
  • Ability to work extra hours and weekends

This position will not be filled until consideration has been made by the CBC/CMG Local Joint Employment Committee.
