Where are the Canadians?

In two episodes of six so far, no Canadian academics have been heard from in the CBC documentary Love, Hate & Propaganda.

Best comedy I’ve seen in a while. Just the concept of Prav, er CBC, commenting on propaganda has me in stitches. Throwing in thought crimes, er I mean hate crimes, and having Georgie Syllables serve the mess is pure comic genius.

They say truth is the first casualty of war,
I say propaganda is the mother of war.

They should be looking at current propaganda to see when and what it’ll birth.

Perhaps, the lack of Canadian commentators or perspective is due to the fact that they are interested in selling this story to international broadcasters? Still… doesn’t seem necessary for our public broadcaster. I’m not sure why CBC is still in the business of making docs anyway? That seems like an old school model. There are plenty of talented Canadian directors producing engaging documentaries for a fraction of the cost it takes the CBC’s in-house dept. Why? Because those independents have been forced to do it economically, not so at the Corp.

True not a 1 speaker can be considered full Can-con.
    Here’s a pitch for George;
what about the men who are still alive and now are Canadians but had to fight for crazy Hitler. My Granddad and many other soldiers during the war got great pleasure helping/letting/rescuing thousands off of trains before their final destination. How’s that for interest and a canadian who can speak on the truth as he was there.Teens would love to hear that side and many, many other incredible stories of the good guys and how they did not believe in hitler & had no choice, but had a choice to save as many innocent lives as they could manage.*
So what about the Granddads George for Can-con!?

In the first four minutes, Stroumbo says, “How, if Hitler was a man of peace …”
and I got mixed up. This isn’t true. To build a whole show on an uninformed
comment by a young person seems strange. Isn’t that the answer to how
propaganda works? Plus operating in a dictatorship makes it a bit easier as
dissenters are wiped out by the Gestapo so the propaganda can’t help but work.

The Nazis were a violent party that engaged in street fighting before 1933, then Crystal Night and then the Night of the Long Knives. Hundreds here and possibly thousands died. Not to mention the takeovers of Austria and Czechoslovakia.

The words Hitler and peace don’t go together too well.

I watched the first episode but haven’t seen the second. However, I’m not at all surprised that they’re continuing to misrepresent Hitler and the Nazis since that was exactly what they did in the first episode. There’s a long thread on here about the first episode that you might want to check out if you haven’t read it yet.

Quite frankly, I’m surprised that the ADL or some other group hasn’t come out condemning the glorification of Hitler in the first episode, as well as the historical inaccuracies and revision of propaganda into fact…..which it sounds like they’re continuing to do in episode 2.

This series doesn’t appear to be an actual CBC production.
With no interviews of any Canadian scholars, this must have been made independently. Independent of Canada.
It would seem that all the CBC did was buy a documentary and then grafted Strombo on to it.
“This is a series that needed to be done,” according to Mark Starowicz, CBC’s Executive Director Documentary Programming.
But the CBC had almost nothing to do with it.
In the four parts remaining, it will be interesting to see if there is, at any time, a reference to how Canadians reacted to the propaganda of foreign powers. It’ll be interesting to see if the word “Canada” is even mentioned during this series.

Nevertheless, I am really enjoying the series.

How old are you? I’d like to know.
      You enjoy this series?
What is it about re-visiting the horrors of gas chambers and piles of bodies that you find enjoyable?
And just as important, are you learning anything?
Anything at all that you did not already know.
Have you learned anything new to you about propaganda?
Show us more of the measure of the mind that would say they enjoy this series.
Such a series could have been good, but this one is insulting.
And it did not need six parts.
More death. People in the millions. Horror and weeping.
A sickening experience from beginning to end, that few will want to watch, week after week.

And two hours in a row of George.
      As the stomach churns.

Why would the CBC include anyone from Canada for anything? What are you thinking? Only the British and Americans have anything worthwhile to say, just ask Jian.
