Dunce Me To The End Of Time

Everything about the CBC’s current situation is encapsulated in the Geri Hall incident.

It demonstrated that the CBC is oblivious to the state of the economy and the circumstances of ordinary Canadians.

~ thus spake John Doyle in today’s Globe & Mail.

Just wait until Canadians start to cancel their cable television.

  • Mark Dowling says:

RTE total revenue from licence fee was 195.7m Euro in 2007 from a population of 4.239m people. At current exchange rates that’s $320m, or under $80 per capita. Not all households pay as seniors are exempted. It’s hard to say how different populations sizes scale as Ireland is less geographically spread (thus cheaper) but the minority language is nowhere near as self-sustaining financial as French is in Canada.

So a person working at CTV or Global, and every member of their family, is paying $36 a year to help the CBC produce shows that will compete against CTV and Global.

    Doyle misleads.
Irish law states that “all premises at which a TV is located require a TV Licence regardless of its use”, and not “Every Irish person is obliged to pay.”

This Hour Has 22 Minutes is clearly a comedic show, if there is anything this economic situation needs is some lightening up. It’s been said a lot (especially lately) that entertainment such as movies and tv (especially comedies) fare well during times of economic hardship. Frankly, from that point of view the CBC has got it’s priorities right and Doyle should learn to lighten up a bit.

Doyle should have mentioned that the CBC gets by on $34 dollars a year per Canuck. Compare that to the $250 each Irishman pays and you’ll get a better idea of why the Corpse is dying.
