Mellissa Fung freed

Finally. Good news from Afghanistan.

Welcome back, Mellissa.

Nov. 10th 1:05pm addendum:
Interview video from CNN:
Several people have pointed out to me that the Afghan press reported on the story at the time.

At least one blogger has wondered if the media blackout was “a case of the right-wing media colluding to ensure a Harper victory.”

The Pakistan Observer is reporting that 2 Taliban leaders were released in exchange for Mellissa’s freedom, which the Canadian government is denying.

You can find out more at today’s conference call.

And why don’t we see the CBC “bug” (exploding tomato?) in the corner of the broadcasts that were rebroadcast on Global or CTV?

They had theirs in the news portion on the privates, but not overlaying a CBC logo.

    Is this a missed opportunity?

I admit to misting up a bit yesterday when I heard yesterday.

When the sit. room was moved, I really got dispirited since it looked like they were hunkering-down for the long haul.

I was surprised that the blackout lasted as long as it did but I don’t think a “Melissawatch – Day 5” form or reportage wuld have done anthying other than upset people and impede the negotiations with unwelcome public pressure.

There are times when “delivering eyeballs” ain’t a great idea.

Glad that the released video shows a relatively healthy Melissa.

I’m actually tearing up a little here. That was a stressed-out month even for those of us on the periphery of the situation, and I have to say that I really worried about the approach the CBC was taking. But looks like they got it exactly right.

    What a week.
