"Hydro" means "electricity"

I mean, NET PUB ENG JOINS FACEBOOK.
Let’s hope this goes better than the MySpace page.

Globe: Proposed amateur sport networks facing hurdles
TSN and Rogers Sportsnet might not intervene with our application, but the Score Television Network might.
Come to think of it, that’s a lot of sports on TV.

Lynne Russell Dialect Watch
The “überglam karateka/newsreadtrix/vixentrix fatale” talks like an American.

Is someone going to get whacked?
The Book of Don gives voice to some persistent rumours.

Canada Reads is coming
Their flickr page tackles the question “Is it possible to look smarmy while reading a book?”

And if he looks a little too comfortable, somehow I get the feeling Nora isn’t really reading this one. At least not here. At this time.

But that’s a hell of a shot of the construction pit next door.

Ritz Carlton condos – I have no idea why anyone would want to pay the kind of money they’re going for to live downtown, so I suppose they’ll mostly be bought by corporations.

  • Saskboy says:

What’s the construction for anyway? I saw it from the CN Tower. Is everything in Toronto having something new built beside it? (Air Canada Center Condos…)

  • Hugh says:

    Roma people, please.

  • Ouimet says:

I want to publicly thank all the people who privately wrote me to offer help, skills, encouragement, links, ideas, and code. I was taken aback by your kindness and generosity.

Next week I’m going to experiment with a few ideas, so I expect to have something that will satisfy the Laurences, the Hughs, the Allans, and the Gypsies.

It’™s a commonly-reiterated myth that ’œgypped’ is like ’œJewed down,’ a racist epithet. According to my friend the actual lexicographer, it isn’™t true. I asked him for a reference in case you don’™t believe me, which I’™m sure you won’™t, as the typical CBC supporter has an unquenchable hunger for oppressed groups to identify with.

  • Hugh says:

another suggestion. title the post something like:

    “Links: Nora Reads, Hydro, etc.”

ie gimme a cue (Links:) so I know what to expect.

  • Hugh says:

@anonymous: the etymology never even occurred to me (except now that you mention it, a tiny distant bell is ringing).

so: point taken and I’ll probably use another word in the future. it’s a funny thing about language, though, there’s really no alternate word that has quite the same meaning.

    short-changed? (too economic)
    stiffed? (too strong)
    swindled? (way too strong)

do you have a suggestion for an alternate word that means: I expected to get something, I did get something but it was less than expected, and I feel vaguely, but not too strongly resentful about it, but mostly I’ll just shrug my shoulders, and while there aren’t any hard feelings, I’ll still regard the provider (in this case, a provider of link posts instead of real posts) with a touch more skepticism the next time they offer me something (eg an “new item” alert in my feed reader)?

what’s a good word for that that doesn’t defame the good name of the Roma People?

Hugh, what have you got against the Roma (Gypsies)? I think I understand what you were trying to say I just don’t see why you need a racial epithet to say it.

  • Hugh says:

    re: disgusing at work:

as for link posts – i always feel gyped when I see a new item, come check it out & it’s a linkpost, instead of insightful prose.

maybe make it consistent: tuesdays for links or something, so at least i can learn to expect disapointment.

I like them. I like them very much, because you have a good perception of news, oddities and fakery.
The threads do become a scattered melange of various gripes and the occasional good cheer, but to some extent they always have been. People go off course, and they’re allowed to do so.
But it’s easier and more enjoyable to follow a consistent discussion than having to move around through five different and equally worthy and compelling topics.
I’d prefer each one was a separate post, so long as it doesn’t look ugly. So that comments are organized. It’s kind of a fundamental expectation that we take for granted in dealing with the net.
I think it’s the only way to build on each others observations with any kind of power and momentum.

The JPod comments caught my eye because I felt horribly uncomfortable every minute of watching the first episode. But it seems enough people liked it that the CBC isn’t embarrassed, so what does it matter that I thought it was insulting, sick, stupid, vacant, frightening, morbid, Alan Thicke making a mockery of himself …

Nora leaning back on that pillow during daylight hours, warm, dry, relaxed. Only the tiny muffled sounds of labourers and machines outside as she studies to express her impressions from this novel.
    Fucking, goddam cushy CBC jobs.
If only I had been born white.

I like it, but commenting is scattered, so following all the threads may make it like last season’s Intelligence…

    I’ve been boo’ed by Hugh!

    It’s a nice rhyme.

I’m not sure about these posts, either. Ever since I started doing it, this site has more visitors. I guess if I was selling something I would be happy with that.

But for me, the fun has always been reading comments. The main reason I started this was to give you guys more things to discuss. Maybe there are now TOO many things to discuss. Maybe you don’t feel like talking. I’m not sure, but it hasn’t really panned out how I expected. Which is par for the course.

Bill Lee had a good suggestion. He said I should have 2 columns, one for main stories and one for links.

And then every link would be its own post, with comments available. So there would be 2 mainbars with no sidecar.

I like this idea a lot, but Blogger doesn’t have a template for that. If anyone knows how to make one, please email me.

And then I would make the page look like Microsoft Word, so I could read it at work without everyone knowing what I was reading.

But I’m open to suggestions. If you’ve read this far, know that you are my target market. I would sincerely appreciate your advice.

Let me know if you like these posts.

Someone may get whacked because somebody is going to have to take the blame. The numbers are a flame-out. To be fair, making a programming call on the basis of a bible and a couple of scripts is difficult. The amateurs get suckered by concept and pitch-spin (usually telling the mark what the audience will be and not the show), the pros look for compelling characters and sharp dialogue (dialogue in “The Border” is some of the worst ever). Even those that know what they are doing get it wrong more often than they get it right, because finally it takes some magic too. The mark of the true fuckups is trying to reshape the thing on the basis of testing – which has never worked.

    I LIKE the link posts.
Being an old fart, I need these things IN MY FACE.

Also, lay off Nora. She’s MY vote for sexiest voice at the Corp.
While I sympathise and understand the quite kinky thing Joe has for Lynn Russell, Nora’s THE ONE!!!!!!

I’m fine with more photos of either of the two….

  • Hugh says:

boo to the link posts. keep em in the sidebar.
