Dropping a disc is against the law

The Hour blog is running a guerrilla marketing campaign called Operation Disc Drop. Viewers are encouraged to burn a CD of their favourite music, label it “DISC DROP – cbc.ca/thehour,” leave it in a public place, and then report back to the Hour blog to tell everyone where the CD is. If you find a CD, you’re to report to the Hour blog and tell them about it.

Sounds like fun. And I hate to be a killjoy, but it’s illegal.

It’s legal to copy music to a CD for personal use. That’s covered by the private-copying levy. Distribution of these CDs, however, is very illegal.

So let this be a lesson to you kids out there. Be careful what that funny man on TV tells you to do. He might not always have your best interests at heart.

Seriously? Like this is going to improve his ratings, status, like whatever? A bit juvi, no? Maybe he’s getting too old to know what the younger, not obviously him, is into….. and to think they cancelled Street Cents!

    Teenagers with music to burn.
It’s quite amazing what “official” CBC blogs are allowed to do, isn’t it?
I told you there’s no parental supervision at The Hour.

I’d argue that the person burning is not making money through this means of distribution. Stop being such a wet tea towel.

After all, one could also argue that it too, is purely “medicinal”.
