Dear gay people: We’re not trying to make fun of you. Really.

Maybe you’ve seen the CBC’s new podcasting ad campaign in print:
or online:
Personally I was puzzled by the combination of fairy tale references, Arabian Nights, and Broadway show tune lyrics. I just chalked it up to whimsy.

But drop one of these ads into Towleroad, “the premium site for modern gay men,” as we did today, either by design or by luck, and the reasons for the “fairy” imagery become more obvious:

If there was a Podcast from anywhere that could be rated as “not to be missed” then surely it would have surfaced by now.
The whole notion of Podcasts having any merit or being new and unique is, I think, a hoax.
    And over-rated.
Anyone putting out a good moment of broadcasting will soon find themselves on commercial airwaves anyway.
I’m not allergic to intelligent comment, just to boredom.
No matter how many “hip” people the CBC hires to be on the radio the net result is still programs that do not capture the attention of the general population. Mostly because they are pretentious and timid.
An exception has always been As It Happens, the closest thing to a program that matters and also has a sense of humour. But you can’t call that a podcast by definition.
All the radio shows should, and hopefully will soon, be available for download.

Some mysterious force holds back Andy Barry and shows like Not The Opera from really being as exciting as they could be.
We’ve become used to settling for “good enough” instead of “great”.

Ouch! Its 43 podcasts and really? not a single one that interests you? That’s harsh. I take it intelligent Radio content is not your bag, Allan… Not really sure where the ad campaign idea originated from (other than the 9th floor) but I kind of like it… maybe I DO enjoy Aladdin, magic wands and wishes too much…..not that there’s anything wrong with that…

How do you make fun of gay people?

40 Podcasts, and still not a single one I want to listen to.

My little heart desires a little more wit, intelligence and sensitivity from the “ho-ho-aren’t-we-amusing” advertising, communications, marketing and sales people. Twits.

IMHO: If you want to appeal to a gay and lesbian audience, you might want to start with some appropriate high-quality content.
