Globe and Mail apologizes; Andrew Ryan picks up where “Gayle HackDonald” leaves off

A correction today in the Globe, Thanks to Antonia:

A noise complaint filed during a taping of the reality show Canadian Idol last Monday in Toronto did not originate from a CBC staff member. Incorrect information appeared in Globe Review on July 26.

Coupled with a real crap piece of work from Andrew Ryan on The One. Full of cheap shots and lame turns of phrase, ill-informed, clueless, and devoid of anything new or interesting to say, the “television critic” gives his take on why the show failed. The answer? It’s “semi-baffling.”

They want me to pay a dollar for this?

Antonia or Ruth-Ellen Soles channeling Antonia? Here’s Ruth-Ellen’s letter to the editor today, in the Globe’s print edition:

I am a touch gleeful at being able to report to readers of the Review section and the editorial page, that a CBC staffer did not call the police complaining about the Canadian Idol crowd making too much noise. In fact, it was a Toronto paid-duty officer calling for extra units to assist with the safety of the gathering crowd. The police department has confirmed it.

“You can’t make this stuff up,” you say? Ooops… they did.

Yes, Ryan’s a crap writer, but in a couple of weeks Doyle will be back he’ll be looking for work. Unemployed newspaper writer, come on over to cbc.ca/arts and join your friends. We need more reallly long articles on musicians who get played on DNTO once in awhile, or obits for British TV shows no one’s ever seen.

And bad publicity? Well the way communications counts it (by the word), these trashing epics are as good as a TV Guide cover.

Any word on refunds or credits to The One sponsors for audiences not delivered?

why the glee at this failure? mainly, i guess, because CBC was trying to do something many people don’t think it ought to do, ie. sell trashy programming.

everyone (well, G&M) is happy CBC failed, partly because we canadians are addicted to schadenfreud, but also because, maybe, the One’s success would have pushed the CBC further in a direction that many (ie me and the people who I agree with) don’t want to see it go: towards increased commercialism.

While the Globe’s “haha strombo failed” wasn’t very interesting (tho I admit to a secret rush of i-told-you-so myself), the “CBC in Trouble” headline isn’t news to readers of Teamakers, and if i understand is a pretty fair headline.

what *do* we do with the CBC? I don’t know, but probably not whatever cutrrent management is doing. doesn;t seem to be working, whether the One worked or not.

The Globe’s fascination with this story is more than just “semi-baffling”. Sometimes shows fail and sometimes copies of the Globe end up at the bottom of birdcages before they are read. CBC’s mistake was missing the bandwagon when it first came around with Canadian Idol and then trying to get on the bandwagon again when the parade was already over. Doesn’t mean we should pat them on the back but it’s not the worst disaster to hit TV broadcasting by any means.
