A tale of 2 CBC’s

The juxtaposition of 2 articles in the Globe today will tell you way more about the CBC than the articles themselves:

The CBC is cash-strapped

The CBC has a cash surplus

I’ve always found the end-of-fiscal spending spree odious, and this year’s particularly so, what with the lockout money that is not lockout money. And every year departments burn cash on new carpets and tell the casuals that there is nothing in the budget for a full time position.

But if they wait around ’til next year…

I’ve never seen it like this before… positions are disappearing, but you can hardly move with all the fancy new equipment being shipped into the office…. new flatscreen LCD monitors are piling up to the ceiling….

We’ve gotten accustomed to the end-of-fiscal spending: since the technical stuff we need is expensive, we pay no attention to the ‘no money’ blues. We have sales guys bring their stuff in anyway.

Like that, when we suddenly hear about cash being available, we can make carefully considered choices. Sometimes we even ask the distributer to have one on the shelf to ship at a moment’s notice.

    Kinda kooky, huh?

It seems they’re going to be pulling the carpet out from under design at the corp in the not to distant future. An wholesale slaughter on the department seems to be in the works, I believe their will be an announcement on this in the coming week. The word is gone.
