Lise Lareau’s 1-cent solution

God bless Lise Lareau and the CMG for finally bringing it up.

Love it or hate it (and if you read this web site, you probably do a lot of both), the CBC is overmandated and underfunded, which is unfair to large parts of the audience.

I’m not sure the 1-cent idea is the best one, but now is the time to get something concrete on the agenda. And the candidates better hurry up and answer those letters, because the CMG is going to write a report on where each one of them stands on public broadcasting.

I know I’ll be reading.

If there’s one thing I’ve noticed over the years, it’s that there’s a cultural streak of frugality that demands the rights of being both in charge and ruthless about being in charge. Why else have the Canadian Tire “Give Like Santa, Save Like Scrooge” ad campaigns held up so well every Season like clockwork this time of year, regardless of whether or not there was an election in the offing?

So, I’m inclined to wonder if CMG isn’t playing their cards exactly right on this one.

My initial reaction when I posted the CMG release was

“Personally I think their call is a little meager: I am in favour of increasing the CBC’s funding to the same level as the BBC’s (the BBC, after all, doesn’t have to contend with the US sitting right next door.) I am also in favour of, once this funding is in place, demanding 100% Canadian, ad free, multi-platform, on demand content from the CBC.”

I’m a bit concerned that even if the politicians commit to an additional $120 million for “expanded local and regional programming and newsgathering” that it still leaves alot of problems and makes it harder to ask for still more funding.

Why not go straight for an additional .25 cents a day (or an additional 3 billion in funding). That, for the forseeable future, would solve the CBC’s funding problems and provide for expanded regional coverage, newsgathering as well as new and improved A & E programming, drama, and “100% Canadian, ad free, multi-platform, on demand content.”
