CBC/Radio-Canada is Canada’s national public broadcaster and one of its largest cultural institutions. CBC/Radio-Canada brings diverse regional and cultural perspectives into the daily lives of Canadians in English, French and eight Aboriginal languages.

Radio-Canada Information Services is looking for a National Assignment Director for the Ottawa Parliament Hill office. Daily responsibilities include organization, coordination and development of the federal political issues coverage. You will be responsible for the coordination and distribution of the workload within the television and radio editorial team for the parliament office. You will be working in close collaboration with the Office Manager and the Coordination Director as well as the team members. You will also be required to plan long term political coverage along with the Chief Directors of the Allocation, Planning and Expertise Centre in Montreal.

Function:

Generally, plans, conceives, organizes, and/or develops the production and realization of a program segment, program, or series. This Producer, however, typically performs the Line-up, Assignment for the CBC News Foreign Assignment Desk. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices and the Producer is ultimately responsible for ensuring that this occurs. Nevertheless, there is wide latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. There is a regular and ongoing requirement to co-ordinate the work of others.

Key Tasks:

The tasks performed by a Producer (National Line-up or Assignment Editor) are similar to those performed by a Producer. The compensation distinction is based on the complexity of the work, the impact, both financially and journalistically of the decisions made, the intense pressure of the working environment and skill and experience required of the incumbent.

We’re looking for a candidate who has the following:

Objective Criteria:

  • Job requires a university degree or equivalent with particular emphasis on Journalism, Political Science and /or national or international affairs
  • Job requires seven years’ solid journalistic experience of which at least three must involve work in radio and/or television broadcasting
  • Ability to conduct research, development and suggest relevant and innovative coverage subjects
  • Solid journalistic skills
  • Superior coaching and mentoring skills
  • Computer skills
  • In depth knowledge of federal politics, operation of the parliament as well as the political issues pan-Canadian
  • Ability to lead an editorial team and work efficiently in a stressful and deadline oriented environment
  • Knowledge of the information programs and mandates of Radio-Canada and RDI as well as the CBC/Radio-Canada journalism norms and practices
  • Available to work overtime and weekends as required

Subjective Criteria:

  • Priority and identity oriented for television and radio information shows.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work constructively with reporters and producers throughout the new service, as well with other news and current affairs program in both television and radio
  • An understanding of the relationship between network and regional programming
  • Open to new ideas and approaches
  • Creativity and skills to find new angles and issues to carry forward the news subject process
  • Innovative, flexible and must be a self starter
  • Must be able to solve problems independently and in group discussions
