Function:

  • Performs reporting and editorial assignments related to the gathering, writing and presentation of program material for radio, television or other media.
  • Work is governed by CBC journalistic and programming policies and standards.
  • Advice and guidance are regularly available but there is latitude for initiative and independent judgement.
  • There may be opportunity to co-ordinate the work of others and close co-operation with the program unit is essential.

Key Tasks:

  • Develops and maintains contacts with a variety of sources.
  • Conducts analysis of facts and information gathered and draws conclusions or raises issues requiring further investigation.
  • Prepares and writes scripts, continuity and headlines.
  • Gathers and reports information from various sources.
  • Decides which elements should be included in an item, their order, length and sequence, as well as the method of transition from one element to another.
  • Contributes ideas or program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives.

As required, performs the following tasks:

  • Critically edit material written by others;
  • Determine, in accordance with established routine, the sequence and timing of the elements that make up a newscast which is typically of a pre-determined format and for which the majority of content is supplied;
  • Liaise with other staff to ensure required material is available;
    select music and effects;
  • Present information and/or analysis on air in a variety of formats;
  • Follow particular areas of current public interest or concern;
  • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.

Qualifications

  • Three or more years of directly related journalistic experience that includes proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry.
  • Broadcasting experience is an asset.
  • University degree in Journalism or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in filing both written and recorded material from the field, through a variety of means.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and analyze a broad range of issues, and to tell those stories with clarity and in a manner that relates the stories to the people affected by them.
  • Ability to write clearly and in a compelling way that leads to a strong presentation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Labrador and issues related to that Region.
  • Ability to communicate well to fellow journalists and senior journalistic leaders.
  • Good on-air performance including the ability to do live reports.
  • A demonstrated interest in breaking original stories.
  • Familiarity with the use of electronic/digital recording and editing of material as well as basic studio operations
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • The ability to relate the stories of Newfoundland and Labrador to the broader national audience.
  • Must be able to work independently and have the interpersonal skills to work effectively as part of a team.
