That's true about the overuse of the tonic note and it's also why this song sounds like the ending of a song all the way through. The person that wrote it obviously has no idea what he's doing. Which apparently doesn't disqualify him from a career in music these days - at least not in Canada.

I love this song. Very powerful, and beautifully performed by K'naan.
I'm sorry to see it being so quickly exploited, first by Coke and now this crass we-are-the-world cliche music video.Everyone involved with that video is a conceited, pampered asshole.

Embarrassing how "musicians" are using human tragedy (yet again) to further their careers. Creepy people! Makes me nauseous. Especially when I know so many unsung heroes involved who get no glory whatsoever. True narcissists. How do they sleep at night?
Oh, and when are the T-Shirts coming out? And the poster? And whatever else we can throw into a landfill?
And what about the devastation in Chile? Doesn't that need a remake of another Canadian song?

It does seem a little suspect that LIGHTS is featured prominently in this song and video, alongside the likes of Avril Lavigne and Nelly Furtado, when LIGHTS' own album fell off the charts months ago and she's considered a failure by Canadian music industry standards. But when your manager hosts a nationally broadcast "Arts" program that many of these same artists and their record companies use for promotion.....you're given a free pass.

Isn't this what "Canadian music" is? An ego trip? Some guy that you've never heard of who insists on being referred to as "legendary"? Other people that you've never heard of pretending to be rock stars? Really sucky music that people pretend is good because it's "Canadian" and it would damage our fragile Canadian egos if we admitted that it sucks?

The song is staid and milquetoast and so is the video. When LIGHTS sang, my reaction was "EEP! Who told this girl she could sing?"

What a disappointment! I thought Lights was an intergalactic sexy warrior queen! But she's just a little woman with a little voice dressed in black. There is no truth in advertising. (And Jian thought the Boxmasters were bad? He must be in love to be that deaf..)

The screen behind the microphone that Lights is singing into is called a "Reflexion Filter". It's something that is used when recording a weak vocalist. With it, you can turn the gain up on the microphone without picking up background noise, which is always a problem when recording someone who sings very quietly.
