CBC calls me about the Apple Tablet

  1. Blocked.
These days, when my iPhone says that on the screen it's likely PoonGirl calling to berate me.
So when I answered it saying "oh, oh, here comes trouble" it was a bit embarrassing to be greeted with the voice of a pleasant woman (is there any other kind employed there?) from the CBC asking if I was excited about tomorrow's expected announcement of a new Apple Tablet.
    Excited? Boy, am I ever!
How excited would you like me to be? Radio excited or TV excited or web page excited?
We haven't even seen the product yet, let alone know what it's going to be able to do. But, almost as much as the iPhone, this is the product we've been waiting for, even if most people don't realize it yet.
Now it's only fair that I say at the outset that I'm another one of those religious zealots who has long subscribed to the cult of Mac. If you're going to spend thousands of hours in front of a computer, it might as well be a good experience, and Apple computers are the only ones truly made for human beings. They are a work of art. Even to this day, I will occasionally lean back, look at the screen and say "this is amazing. Perfect. Beautiful." My experience has been that very creative people and very dumb people who need things to be simple are the ones most drawn to the Apple operating system. I fit right in with this demographic.
The iPhone was a major breakthrough.
Before it came along, I was carrying around a cellphone, an iPod and a camera, and wishing I had the internet too. But laptops are so bulky, and expensive to replace when they inevitably fall to the floor or have Gatorade spilled on them.
With the iPhone I was able to do away with all those devices and have the internet in the palm of my hand.
    Over the moon.
And haven't even mentioned the App Store and Bejewelled. Or the program that let's me see and control what's on the screen of my home computer.
    But still I wasn't satisfied.
Yes, I could listen to thousands of radio stations, watch a full broadcast of Rachel Maddow, take a picture and immediately post it for all the world to see. And YouTube. Wow. Never bored again no matter where I was. The screen and clarity of the picture blew everything else away.
But what a pain that screen was for reading the internet, or a pdf or a book.
Clearly what I wanted was a larger screen. (also the ability one day to do video conferencing with family in Vancouver or friends in New York).
And that touch screen keyboard. The only thing keeping Blackberry in business. Fine for Twitter, but gruelling to try and do a blog post when thumbs aren't pinkies.

I've seen the tablet readers that are selling like hotcakes. Kindle, Sony, Barnes & Noble. But they're book readers, with boring black and whit text.
It's the internet you want. The world's biggest encyclopedia, and the Huffington Post too.
A book-sized, lightweight, beautiful colour screen from which to read every newspaper in the world and Google Books too.
Video, music, speakerphone, photo album and games, all come second.
A waterproof screen so you can read in the bathtub.
A larger optional, and preferably tactile, keyboard. Perhaps one embedded in a slipcover that travels with the tablet. That would be just the ticket.
I'm not asking that it run Photoshop or burn DVD's.
Just a simple, comfortable reader that gives me the internet in all its wondrous, colourful glory.
We know it's coming tomorrow, just not the details.
But it doesn't matter. Already the iPhone has evolved in just one year, and a tablet will too.
The only thing I need to hear is - how soon can I buy it?

the name and pictures are guesswork ...

  3. I think it sounds pretty cool, but they need a better name ! iPad ? Sounds like something that happens to a woman once a month (if she doesn't use the Depo needle birth control method to stop it).

I think it is funny that I was the reason Allan answered the phone in his usual low key grumbling voice. The one that sounds all casual, slightly put off that I am phoning... yet secretly estatic to be hearing from me. It is a hard mix to pull off.

The thing about old people, like Allan, is that they LOVE to feel important. Allan must have been so excited to have his opinion asked (I hope he didn't use the word "neat", or I will have to train him a bit more thoroughly ).

My one question is ... when the ipad thingy comes out will this post be re-posted ?

  4. likely part of the set-up for today's announcement.

  7. Why would anyone that already has an iPhone and a MacBook buy this?

  8. because the iPhone's too small and MacBook too awkward.
    Where's the camera?
Can it be hooked up to a large screen LCD?
A stand to set it in.
A tablet is the future for everyone.

  10. Price: "Starts at $499"

That's a fairly low price, but that only gets you the 16GB model with no 3G. Adding 3G to any model costs $130 more, and each tier of storage is $100 more. So that's $599 for the 32GB model without 3G, and $829 for the whole enchilada - 64GB and 3G.

  11. 3 months away.
    The price is great.
    My concern is connectivity.
I don't want to have to pay for a third data plan if it can be avoided.

Storage capacity is mute, since primarily text, music and photos.
I think video is a waste of space, and USB keys can carry a lot cheaply.
We all want one today, right?

  12. Add at least $100 for starting price in Canada.
